FDA presentation will cover new food safety rules

The Food and Drug Administration will give a free presentation Thursday on new federal food safety rules that are expected to significantly affect growers, packers and food processors.
The presentation will run from 1 to 5 p.m. April 25 at the Muldoon Library in Anchorage, as well as via live webcast at the Homer Library, the Delta Career Advancement Center and the Butrovich Building, Room 108 A and B, on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. It will also be available online at bit.ly/fda-rules.
Charles Breen, director of the Seattle FDA district office, will lead the presentation, which will focus on proposed rules regarding produce and preventive control for human food. The rules relate to the FDA Food Safety and Modernization Act, which was signed into law in 2011. The FDA says the law is the most sweeping reform of the country’s food safety laws in more than 70 years.
Breen’s presentation is sponsored by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. Members of the food industry may submit comments regarding the rules to the FDA by May 16.
