Ethan Berkeland, left, and Tristan Sayre discuss the day's events about 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30, at Heritage Park on the Fairbanks campus. The flame rises from a sculpture resembling an Inupiaq seal-oil lamp, called a naniq. The park's naniq flame is lit at the beginning of the school year, at commencement and on special occasions. The park and sculpture, built in 1976, are dedicated to the heritage of Alaska's Native peoples.
