Jamie Hollingsworth, site manager for the Bonanza Creek Long Term Ecological Research site, scrapes mud from a permafrost core sample freshly unearthed from a depth of about 8 feet. Hollingsworth and his colleagues were collecting samples from a black spruce forest near the Tanana River about 25 miles southwest of Fairbanks.
