Fehrenbach and Treinen break record at Ester Dome 5K

Freshman Michael Fehrenbach (Sankt Maergen, Germany) and graduate runner Lex Treinen (Anchorage, Alaska) both broke the program record at the Ester Dome Uphill Run as the duo took the top two spots on the morning of Sept. 8 at Ester Dome.

Fehrenbach finished the five-kilometer uphill climb in 22 minutes, 40 seconds, to break former harrier Marius Korthaur's 2007 record of 22:47. Treinen was right behind the German rookie in 22:41, setting a personal-best time by 69 seconds.

“Ester Dome is a great test of fitness and to have two guys go under Marius Korthaur's record is impressive,” interim head coach Matt Dunlap said. “Anytime someone can run the fastest they've run is a testament to their training.”

Five other runners finished sub-24 minutes as freshman Isaac Lammers (Eagle River, Alaska) was third in 23:11, junior Tux Seims (Homer, Alaska) was fourth in 23:27, sophomore Kenneth Brewer (Chugiak, Alaska) was fifth in 23:48, freshman Max Olex (Aalen, Baden Württemberg, Germany) took sixth in 23:50 and redshirt freshman Ross MacDougall  (Astoria, Ore.) finished seventh in 23:57. Last year, only two racers ran better than 24 minutes.

Sophomore Logan Hanneman (Fairbanks, Alaska) dropped the most time from a previous Ester Dome run by trimming 1:50 off from a year ago to take eighth in 24:15. JuniorAndrew Arnold (Anchorage, Alaska) and freshman John Klein (Anchorage, Alaska) rounded out the top-10 with times of 24:26 and 24:41, respectively.

In all, seven harriers turned in personal-best times, including four by over a minute.

“Dunlap added, “To have seven of 10 runners who have run this race before have personal records, that's awesome.”

The Nanooks return to action Sept. 22 when they run in the Saint Martin's Invitational in Lacey, Wash.
