Troth Yeddha’ Run for the Park will be Sept. 10
August 29, 2016
People from all walks of life can go the distance to help raise awareness for Troth
Yeddha’ Park, a green space that celebrates Alaska Native culture.
The Fifth Annual Troth Yeddha’ Run for the Park will start at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016, at the green space located between the University of Alaska Museum of the North and the Reichardt Building on the Fairbanks campus. The 5K event is sponsored by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Rural, Community and Native Education and the UAF College of Rural and Community Development.
Registration costs $20, a donation to the Troth Yeddha' Legacy Initiative, but it's free to university students with a UA ID. Runners may register by mail at Beaver Sports or at the vice chancellor's office on the fourth floor of UAF’s Brooks Building.
Centuries before it became home to an institution of higher learning, the ridge that now is home to UAF was known as Troth Yeddha' by the Lower Tanana Athabascans. Translated into English, Troth Yeddha' means “wild potato ridge.”
Troth Yeddha’ Park commemorates the Alaska Natives who came to the hill to share traditional knowledge and harvest nearby wild potatoes. The park brings together people from all walks of life and honors the wisdom of indigenous knowledge.
