Fittest Winner Competition off to a great start

Brian Rogers has been UAF's chancellor since 2009. As it is with any new endeavor, when we made the decision to launch the first ever Fittest Winner Competition, we had no idea what type of response we would get. We knew we had within the UAF family no shortage of faculty and staff who were game for a challenge and a little friendly competition.

What we didn’t know is just how extensive that would turn out to be. More than 40 teams and over 500 participants have risen to the challenge. We have departments participating from across the Fairbanks campus, the Community and Technical College, the Chukchi Campus in Kotzebue and the Palmer Center for Sustainable Living, which has taken this competition from being campus-wide to statewide.

At the end of week three we have already seem some impressive gains…and some impressive losses. Total hours of exercise for all participants are 8,211 while total amount of weight loss is close to 1,000 pounds! I’m extremely proud of the success of each one of the participants and am looking forward to seeing how those numbers look when the competition ends in May.  More importantly, I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing how those of you participating look and feel when the competition ends and hope that this is personally satisfying for you.

I want to give special thanks to Derek Miller for his work coordinating the competition on a weekly basis, and to him and his co-chair Kris Racina for getting the competition going and working through the bugs along the way.

Keep up the great work!
