Forums scheduled for CNSM dean search

Three candidates for the dean of College of Natural Science and Mathematics will give a public lecture as part of the selection process. Individual, one-hour presentations by Karsten Hueffer, Leah Berman and Kinchel Doerner will focus on their vision for CNSM. There will be an opportunity for candidates to answer questions from the audience. The public forums will be available via livestream and will be recorded.

Audience members can submit questions during the public forum by emailing uaf-provost@alaska.edu. The public is welcome to provide anonymous feedback on the candidates at the Provost's Office website.

Faculty, staff and students are strongly encouraged to attend these presentations. A reception with light hors d’oeuvres will follow the forums.

Karsten Hueffer received veterinary training in Germany followed by a Ph.D. from Cornell University on canine parvovirus. After graduate school he furthered his molecular pathogenesis training at Yale Medical School. Since arriving at UAF in 2006, Hueffer has expanded his research interest to investigate infectious diseases in Alaska wildlife with a special interest in zoonotic diseases and other One Health-related issues as well as engagement of Alaska Native and rural students in research. He has taught courses in the departments of Biology and Wildlife and Veterinary Medicine, from large introductory courses to graduate and professional courses. He holds a postgraduate certificate in veterinary education and has been internationally recognized for his teaching excellence. Together with Arleigh Reynolds, Hueffer leads the NIH-funded Biomedical Learning and Student Training program, or BLaST. He currently serves as associate dean of veterinary medicine and leads the UAF portion of the UAF-CSU collaborative professional veterinary program.

Leah Berman joined the UAF faculty in 2009 and holds faculty rank as a tenured professor of mathematics. She had previously earned tenure at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, where she worked from 2002-2009. Berman was named interim dean of the College of Natural Science and Mathematics at UAF in 2018 after having served as chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Her research interests include graph theory and combinatorics, with an emphasis on symmetry. She earned her B.A. in mathematics and philosophy from Lewis and Clark College in 1997 and her M.S. and Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Washington in 2001 and 2002. She also is currently serving as a member of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly.

Kinchel Doerner is the dean of the Graduate School at South Dakota State University. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He spent four years as a postdoctoral research scientist at the Medical College of Virginia-Virgina Commonwealth University and 16 years at Western Kentucky University where he achieved the rank of full professor of biology.  While at WKU he also served as interim dean of Graduate Studies and Research. Since arriving at SDSU he has served as the interim vice president of research and economic development as well as the interim dean of the newly formed College of Natural Sciences, which houses the departments of Biology and Microbiology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Physics, and Geography. Doerner has served on the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance Cabinet and chaired the Graduate Dean’s Committee. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Council of Graduate Schools, the leading national organization representing graduate education. Doerner has also served on the Advisory Committee on Advocacy and Public Policy for CGS and currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools.
