Some things shouldn't be tried at home, like torching gummy bears to release a blaze of purple light, popping hydrogen-filled balloons to make big explosions or creating a volcano that erupts 20-foot plumes of "lava" from a trash can.

That's why there's the free University of Alaska Fairbanks Science Potpourri on Saturday, April 11, from noon to 3 p.m. Trained professionals in the form of scientists will give science demonstrations and lead activities that show just how fun science can be. The College of Natural Science and Mathematics hosts the free event, which will be in the Reichardt Building on the UAF campus.

"This event allows me to share my enthusiasm for science with so many children and their families," said chemist Sarah Hayes, who leads the explosive chemistry show. "And it's really important to connect the Fairbanks community with the cool science going on in their own backyard."

The event will feature a "potpourri" of activities, like digging for fossils, seeing real lava, creating an earthquake and looking at stars in a portable planetarium. Children will be able to see themselves in a heat-sensitive camera, witness how liquid nitrogen can be used to make instant ice cream and explore a marine touch tank.

The Reichardt Building will be full of experiments and hands-on activities. There will also be three shows:

12:30 p.m. — Levitating with physics.

1:30 p.m. — Have a blast with chemistry.

2:30 p.m. — A “lava” fun with volcanoes.

Activities are designed for children of all ages, including toddlers. Adults should accompany all children. Parking is available behind the Reichardt Building and in nearby parking lots. For more information, visit  www.uaf.edu/cnsm/science-potpourri or call 907-474-7608.
