The University of Alaska Fairbanks will host a free science night in Dillingham to help the community celebrate its curiosity through hands-on activities.

UAF's Alaska Summer Research Academy will host the community science night, which is open to people of all ages, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wed nesday, March. 29,  at the Dillingham Elementary School gym. Local and UAF scientists and educators will lead the activities.

Hands-on activities will include:

  • A sandbox that becomes a virtual map, allowing people can build mountains and hills by piling up sand and then make it "rain" by hovering their hand over the map. The virtual water flows down to form rivers and lakes.

  • Making a bug

  • Making a constellation

ASRA organizes two community science nights per year. They're held in the rural communities where UAF has campuses — Nome, Dillingham, Bethel and Kotzebue. ASRA is part of the UAF College of Natural Science and Mathematics.
