FY20 benchmarks

Earlier this week, each chancellor was asked by President Johnsen to develop plans to achieve new benchmarks for FY20, with the goal of cost savings and efficiencies. Chancellors must submit plans for meeting the new benchmarks by Feb. 1.

I plan to enlist the help of the campus community through a series of task forces, and draw upon our current work in strategic planning and strategic enrollment planning to chart a path toward the new targets as well as the UA Board of Regents’ 2025 goals. This will require an ongoing effort throughout the coming weeks and months.

I have asked the provost and vice chancellors to nominate three to five individuals to serve on the following task forces:

  • Class Size — What are the optimum class sizes at different levels and fields at UAF, and how do we achieve those results while improving the student experience?

  • Adjunct Teaching — What is the best use of adjunct teaching across UAF, and how do we balance adjunct vs. full time faculty to optimize resource use?

  • Policies and Procedures — What UAF- or system-level procedures are unnecessarily burdensome and could be modified to create efficiencies?

  • eCampus Expansion — In what ways can eCampus be further developed or utilized to improve the student experience and reduce costs?

  • Noncredit Accounting and Credentialing — How do we and how should we account for and evaluate the many noncredit courses and credentials we offer?

Your suggestions or recommendations in these areas are welcome.  I look forward to a robust conversation over the coming months.
