Health education programs training offered in Fairbanks
May 2, 2017
Participants in a five-day training offered in Fairbanks during June will learn how
to deliver two health education programs on the self-management of diabetes and of
chronic disease.
Health professionals or community volunteers who complete the training may offer both
six-week programs at hospitals, health centers, social service agencies, senior centers
and other community sites. The Stanford University Patient Education Research Center
programs include information on managing symptoms, communicating with health care
providers, decision-making, fighting fatigue and pain, eating healthier and monitoring
blood sugar levels.
Leslie Shallcross, a registered dietician and agent for the University of Alaska Fairbanks
Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the training from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. June
12-16 at the district Extension office at 724 27th Ave. The Diabetes Self-Management
Program and the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program are recommended by the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, the Health Resources and Service Administration
and other agencies.
The training is co-sponsored by the Alaska Nurses Association, Extension and the Alaska
Department of Health and Social Services. Continuing education credits in nursing
are available. Shallcross said current trained leaders who need the 2016 Diabetes
Self-Management Program curriculum update may attend the final day of this training.
Two leaders are required to lead all workshops, so organizations are encouraged to
send more than one trainee. The cost is $185. For more information or registration,
