Healthy Living lecture series begins May 30

University of Alaska Fairbanks Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning will present
its fifth annual Healthy Living lecture series starting on May 30.
The series features experts and specialists in various health issues. The hour-long
lectures begin at 7 p.m. every Tuesday in the Murie Building auditorium at UAF, followed
by question-and-answer sessions.
Urologist Dr. John Huffer will launch the series on May 30 with “Avoiding and eliminating
modern diseases of affluence through nutritional excellence.”
The summer schedule includes:
May 30 — “Avoiding and eliminating modern diseases of affluence through nutritional
excellence,” Dr. John Huffer, urologist
June 6 — “Skin cancer: The complete story,” Dr. Brooke Walls, dermatologist
June 13 — “Demystifying the Fourth Floor: What happens in an inpatient psychiatric
ward,” Dr. Vanessa Venezie, psychiatrist, Michelle Tirrell, licensed clinical social
worker, and Bobbi Ross, occupational therapist
June 20 — “Marijuana and health: The highs and lows,” Dr. Jay Butler, chief medical
officer, Alaska Department of Health and Social Services
June 27 — “Parks and Recreation: Community health at your fingertips,” Mike Bork,
director of Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation
July 11 — “Is this an emergency? Do I need to see a doctor now?” Dr. Anne Hanley,
pediatrician, and Dr. Mark Simon, emergency room physician
July 18 — “Arthritis in Alaska,” Dr. Raymond Wilson, rheumatologist
July 25 — “Are you steady on your feet? Ways to keep you there,” Cheryl Sackett, physical
therapist, and Heidi Watkins, athletic trainer
Aug. 1 — “Moving toward a plant-based diet,” Katie Garrity, dietitian
Aug. 8 — “Laugh yourself healthy with laughter yoga,” Mike Bork, certified laughter
yoga leader
