Director of athletics Gary Gray has hired Charlie Hill as the University of Alaska Fairbanks' assistant athletic director for compliance and he assumed his duties effective July 1.

"Charlie has progressed very quickly in the field of NCAA compliance, which for us involves both Division I and Division II," Gray said. "As a compliance intern, he communicated very well with our coaching staff and is now ready to lead our efforts in that important area."

"I'm thankful for this opportunity given to me by Dr. Gray," Hill said. "I spent the last year training under Kristi Giddings (former compliance officer) and Dr. Gray to help prepare me to be the lead compliance administrator in the department. I'm excited to continue to work with Alaska's coaches, student-athletes and administrative staff."

His primary responsibilities will include the coordination and maintenance of a comprehensive compliance program, the development of education materials to assist coaches, boosters and high schools better understand NCAA bylaws, track initial and continuing eligibility among student-athletes and serve as the primary liaison between athletics and financial aid, the registrar's office, the eligibility center and the business office.

He plans to develop better relationships with area high schools to help prospective student-athletes understand the initial academic qualifications for NCAA member institutions and to continue to educate coaches and administrative staff members, which are areas Hill feels is vital to the success of the Nanooks athletics department.

Hill transitioned into the lead compliance role after spending the previous academic year in the compliance office as both a student assistant and later the lead compliance contact following Giddings' departure in the fall.

During his year working with NCAA rules and regulations, Hill was responsible for being a support role in rule interpretation for Alaska's coaching staffs, dealt with official visits, academics and national letters of intent for prospective student-athletes and also preparing grant-in-aid for financial aid purposes. He was also responsible for providing the documents and information from past academic years to the NCAA for its investigation on Alaska athletics.

Prior to his work in the world of NCAA compliance, Hill was a student assistant in Alaska's media relations office, handling video duties for men's basketball, as well as other tasks for the media relations department.

Hill graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in May 2013 with a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in management, along with an accounting minor.

He is also an active member of the Alaska Air National Guard, holding the rank of Senior Airman, working in communications. A 2007 graduate of Ben Eielson High School on Eielson Air Force Base, Hill played basketball and baseball, was an All-Conference and All-State honoree in basketball and played one season of collegiate hoops at Mayville State University.
