The Alaska Nanooks host the Lake Superior State Lakers for their Central Collegiate Hockey Association home opener this weekend at the Carlson Center. The teams faceoff at 7:05 p.m. AKDT both nights.

Here are the need to know notes for the Lake Superior State series and Alaska Hockey:

  • Alaska trails the Lakers in the all-time series 15-28-6, but has the upper hand in the Fairbanks meetings at 8-7-5. The Nanooks are 5-4-1 in their last 10 meetings with the Lakers; however, they have been dominate in the last 12 games at the Carlson Center, where they are 6-1-5 in those meetings with LSSU.

  • LSSU ended the Nanooks 2011-12 campaign via a series sweep in the first round of the CCHA playoffs on Mar. 2-3. The Blue and gold lost 3-2 the first night and 2-0 in their season finale at Taffy Able Arena in Sault Saint Marie, Mich.

  • Alaska dropped its CCHA opening game at #18 Ferris State 6-3, giving the Nanooks a 1-3-1 mark in league-opening games under head coach Dallas Ferguson.

  • With last Saturday's win, the Nanooks have beaten two ranked teams in their last three outings and both were by one-goal margins. They topped No. 2 North Dakota 2-1 on Oct. 20, and No. 18. FSU on Oct. 27 3-2.

  • Senior forward Andy Taranto notched a pair of assists in Saturday's 3-2 win to bring his career totals to 44-49—93 in 115 outings. The team's leader in career offense is seven points shy of becoming the 18th Alaska Nanook to score 100 career points.

  • Junior forward and CCHA Offensive Player of the Week Cody Kunyk scored two points in each outing against the Bulldogs, giving him 15 career multi-point games.

  • Sophomore goalie Sean Cahill recorded his first collegiate victory between the pipes for Alaska with a 23-save effort in last Saturday's 3-2 triumph at FSU.

  • Rookie Tyler Morley scored the go-ahead, game-winning goal with 50 seconds left in Saturday's game at Ferris State to lift the Nanooks past Ferris State. He is tied for the rookie lead in scoring with Josh Atkinson (1-3—4) with a team-high three goals and one assist, good for third-best on the team. He has scored in four of Alaska's six games this season and they are 3-1 when he checks in on the scoresheet.
