The Alaska Nanooks hockey team will host Hockey Night School with the Nooks on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the Carlson Center. Check-in begins at 6 p.m. This inaugural event is an opportunity for hockey fans, new or experienced, to learn more about the sport and take a behind-the-scenes look at the Alaska Nanooks program.

Hockey Night School with the Nooks will be highlighted by breakout sessions taught by coaches and players, explaining different areas associated with the game. Some areas will go over basic hockey guidelines (fundamentals, rules, how to tape a stick, locker room etiquette, etc.), while other stations will cover more complicated tactics (systems, special teams, faceoff strategies, etc.).

All participants will interact with players and coaches, attend a Q&A session with head coach Erik Largen and will receive a souvenir Alaska Nanooks hockey wine glass.

Tickets to Hockey Night School with the Nooks are $35 per person and include admission to the event, complimentary beer and wine, light appetizers, two general admission tickets to the Jan. 10-11 Alaska vs. Lake Superior State hockey series and a goody bag, plus a chance to win door prizes such as box suite tickets and an Alaska Nanooks jersey.

Because there is complimentary beer and wine, this event is for those 21 years of age or older, no exceptions. Please bring a valid ID.

Registration is online. Payment will be accepted at the door at check-in with either cash, check, Visa or Mastercard. The Alaska Nanooks will also accept walk-ups.

Entrance to the event will be the main front doors of the Carlson Center (southwest entrance to the building). There is no need to bring any hockey gear, but patrons should dress comfortably, as some stations will take place on the ice (with carpet).

Hockey Night School with the Nooks coincides with several events associated with the hockey team next week. On Friday, Jan. 10, the Nanooks will celebrate National Hockey Mom Day, where they will honor all current and former hockey moms. Saturday, Jan. 11, will be Hockey Girl Appreciation Day, recognizing local girls youth hockey teams and former NCAA Division I and III female college hockey players from Fairbanks.
