Hockey visits Columbus for series at OSU

Fairbanks, Alaska - The Alaska Nanooks visit Columbus, Ohio this weekend, where they will face the Ohio State Buckeyes for a Central Collegiate Hockey Association road series on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m EST (3:05 p.m. AKT).

Here are the need to know notes about the OSU series and Alaska Hockey:


  • Alaska visits Columbus this weekend to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes, who are 1-0-1 in the CCHA this year and were idle last weekend. The Nanooks lead the all-time series 25-24-6 but trail 14-8-4 in the Columbus meetings.

  • The Nanooks are 5-2-3 against the Buckeyes in the last 10 games, 7-3-3 under head coach Dallas Ferguson and 2-1-3 at OSU under his tutelage.

  • The two teams met at OSU during the 2011-12 season, when they skated to a 22 tie the first night (and OSU prevailed in the shootout) before the host Buckeyes shutout the Nanooks 6-0.

  • Alaska saw its four-game home winning streak snapped in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Lakers. They were unbeaten in their previous four regular season games at the Carlson Center, where they had been unbeaten beginning with a 3-2 triumph over LSSU on Feb. 11, 2012.

  • After trailing 1-0 after the first 40 minutes on Friday, the Nanooks bounced back with a two-goal third period to beat the visiting Lakers 2-1. It was the Nanooks first win, when trailing after two periods, since Nov. 27, 2010, when the Nanooks came from behind via a four-goal third period and beat Ohio State 5-2 in Columbus, Ohio.

  • Four of Alaska's last six games have been decided by one goal, accounting for every win thus far this season.

  • Senior right wing Andy Taranto recorded his 50th career helper on Friday night before adding a goal and an assist on Saturday. The three-point weekend elevated the team leader for career offense's totals to 46-50—96 in 117 games and putting him four points shy of reaching the triple-digit benchmark only 17 other former Nanooks have reached. He is tied for the early league-lead with 3 goals and 3 assists in four conference contests.

  • Alaska is averaging 37 shots per game and holding their opponents to less than 25. They have fired 39 or more shots in each of the last four games, including Saturday night's 50-shot effort: the most since their 2-1 triple-overtime loss against Nebraska-Omaha on Mar. 9, 2008, when they fired 52 shots on goal. After registering their season-low of 26 shots in their season-opener against Air Force, they have shot no less than 32 times in each subsequent outing.

  • Junior left wing Colton Beck is tied for the league lead in power-play goals with two in four conference contests.

  • The Nanooks penalty kill is second best among CCHA teams at 87.1% (27-of-31).
