Allan Katz, former U.S. ambassador to Portugal, will visit Fairbanks to discuss incivility and gridlock in Washington, D.C., and why America needs a "village square" approach to discussing difficult issues.
The free event, sponsored by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning, will begin at 7 p.m., May 19, in the Murie Building auditorium on the Fairbanks campus.
With the upcoming political season, Katz intends to offer insight into the workings of decision making in Washington. Katz is a founder of The Village Square (tothevillagesquare.org). The Village Square promotes the idea of agreeing to disagree and doing so in a respectable and civil manner. The organization is "dedicated to maintaining factual accuracy in civic and political debate by growing civil dialog on divisive issues, and recalling the history and principles at the foundation of our democracy."
President Barack Obama nominated Katz to be ambassador to the Republic of Portugal in November 2009. Katz assisted in the fiscal bailout, the Lisbon NATO Summit and the Portuguese Holocaust Conference. Katz has been recognized nationally for his work as an attorney and community leader.
