International piano competition coming to Fairbanks campus

The University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Liberal Arts will host the Alaska International Piano-e-Competition in June and July. It will be the first international piano competition ever held in the state of Alaska.
The competition will begin with the drawing of lots on June 28 and conclude on July 12 with an award ceremony and gala concert showcasing the winning competitor in performance with the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra. It will feature 24 top competitors and seven judges from countries around the world, including Canada, Finland, Germany, Russia, Vietnam and Hong Kong. All performances will take place live in the Davis Concert Hall on the UAF campus. Tickets go on sale in March.
The Alaska International Piano-e-Competition will feature the use of a Yamaha Disklavier Mark IV grand piano to broadcast its performances. Disklavier technology captures the performance of the pianist and shares it through the web with other Disklaviers, which then play remotely, recreating the musician's performance in locations around the world. These performances may occur in real-time, as the signal is broadcast, or at a later date, depending on when Disklavier owners choose to tune in. All performances from the competition will be broadcast globally via the web as well as through the Disklavier network.
The International Piano-e-Competition is a recognized, established global arts event, first held in Minnesota in 2002. It comes to UAF through the efforts of Eduard Zilberkant, president's professor of piano, chair of the UAF music department, and conductor and music director of the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra.
