The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service will host an eight-hour workshop on designing and maintaining hydronic systems for wood-burning boilers April 12 in Ketchikan.

Mechanical engineer and author John Siegenthaler will teach the workshop from 1-9 p.m. at the Ted Ferry Civic Center in Ketchikan. The workshop will begin shortly before the two-day Alaska Wood Energy Conference ends on April 12, also in the civic center.

Siegenthaler has more than 32 years of experience designing high-efficiency hydronic heating systems and is the author of “Modern Hydronic Heating.” Workshop topics will include operating characteristics of pellet-fired boilers and cordwood gasification boilers, thermal storage options, proper venting practices, creating a combination system for heating and domestic hot water production and retrofitting and integration with existing boilers.

March 10 is the deadline to register. The cost is $200 and 6.5 CEUs are available for engineers. Registration for the conference or the workshop is available at www.uaf.edu/ces/nrcd/awec/.
