KUAC public broadcasting announced today that the station has three fully scheduled HD radio channels now available over-the-air. In addition to KUAC 89.9 FM in a high quality digital signal (KUAC HD), listeners can enjoy two new KUAC channels, KUAC2 and KUAC3 when tuned in with a digital radio as well as online via web streaming at kuac.org.

HD radio is new technology that enables radio stations to broadcast programs digitally, a tremendous technological leap from today’s familiar analog broadcasts. For HD listeners, signal fading, static, hisses and pops are a thing of the past.

“We are excited to be able to provide additional, cost-effective services for our listeners in Interior Alaska,” said Keith Martin, general manager of KUAC. “The initial investment for listeners is not as extensive or complicated as the digital television transition was for viewers. Many newer cars are sold with FM/HD capable radios, and currently there are local merchants that can install HD car audio systems. While there are no local retailers offering tabletop radios, we are hopeful HD radios will be stocked in local stores in the future.”

KUAC HD (89.9-1) features the same great programming our listeners in Fairbanks and the surrounding communities already receive from KUAC FM, including NPR’s “Morning Edition,” “Performance Today,” Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me,” “World Café,” and locally produced music shows like “Alaska Live,” “Opera,” “Funk Roots,” and “Postcards.”

KUAC2 (89.9-2) spotlights energetic and entertaining news, talk and an eclectic blend of blues, folk and global music. KUAC2 offers popular, groundbreaking programs not currently heard on KUAC 89.9 FM, like “RadioLab, Studio 360,” “Snap Judgment,” Harry Shearer’s “Le Show,” “American Routes” and much more.

KUAC3 (89.9-3) is a strong complement to KUAC 89.9 FM and KUAC2, with a blend of the latest news and information from the BBC World Service, a healthy supply of classical and jazz music, and cultural programs like “The Splendid Table,” Zorba “Paster On Your Heath,” and “Being/Speaking of Faith.”
