Lecture to explore relationships, sexuality for people with autism

One of the nation’s leading experts on autism will give a free public lecture Wednesday, July 18 at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus.
The speaker, Stephen Shore, is the president emeritus of the Asperger’s Association of New England as well as former board member of the Autism Society of America. He will speak about relationships and sexuality for people with autism.
Shore was nonverbal until he was four years old and was diagnosed with “atypical development and strong autistic tendencies.” Shore was considered too sick to be treated on an outpatient basis and was recommended for institutionalization. However, with persistence and the support of his parents, teachers, friends and other professionals, Shore today is among the top experts on autism. Shore has a doctorate in special education from Boston University and is currently a professor at Adelphi University, where his research focuses on matching best practice to the needs of people with autism. He also presents and consults internationally on adult issues pertinent to education, relationships, employment, advocacy and disclosure.
Shore has published many books including “Beyond the Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger Syndrome,” “Ask and Tell: Self-advocacy and Disclosure for People on the Autism Spectrum,” and “Understanding Autism for Dummies.” He also recently released a DVD, “Living Along the Autism Spectrum: What it means to have Autism or Asperger Syndrome.”
Shore’s lecture is sponsored in part by the Autism Society of Alaska, Fairbanks Resource Agency and UAF School of Education. There will be a book signing following the presentation.
