Library to host discussion on Stevens, pipeline

The exhibit opening and presentation, “Pipeline Politics & People: Reflecting on 35 Years of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System,” will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Level 3 of the library. The new exhibit will feature items related to the pipeline’s development. A reception will follow the speakers’ presentations.
The event will focus on the early years of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System and will feature recollections of the era by former pipeline workers, plus discoveries from the Ted Stevens Papers Project. Stevens was an aggressive pipeline advocate and the collection of his papers, film footage and other items offers insight into the process that made the pipeline possible. Speakers will include Dirk Tordoff of the Alaska Film Archives at the library, who will present film footage of pipeline construction and the political effort that made it possible. Mary Anne Hamblen, archivist for the Ted Stevens Papers, will talk about Stevens’ part in the conception and building of the pipeline. And two TAPS veterans and Alyeska Pipeline Service Company employees, John Baldridge and Lorena Hegdal, will speak about their experiences in the early pipeline days.
