MapTEACH updates look
October 22, 2012
MapTeach has given its web presence a whole new look. MapTEACH, short for "Mapping Technology Experiences with Alaska’s Community Heritage," is
a place-based educational program and curriculum for middle and high school teachers
and students focused on understanding the local landscape from multiple perspectives
and on learning to make and use computer-based maps of scientific, cultural and personal
significance. At its core, this curriculum is place-based and interdisciplinary in
nature, and seeks to connect students, teachers, community members and scientists
in an exploration of the local landscape from multiple perspectives.
Peter Webley, an assistant research professor at the Geophysical Institute, leads the Google Earth curriculum efforts for the project. MapTEACH is a collaborative
project among the Alaska Geological and Geophysical Surveys, the Alaska Department
of Natural Resources, the UA Geography Program, the GI and the University of Wisconsin Madison. The project is funded by the National
Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education and the UA Geography Program.
