Four skiers finished in the top 10 of the men's 15-kilometer freestyle technique mass start Sunday as the Alaska Nanooks took second place on the day and finished second overall at the NCAA Central Region Championship at the Michigan Tech Nordic ski trails.
Northern Michigan claimed the top three individual spots in the 15K races to finish with 69 team points and claim the region's team title, beating Alaska by just one point as the Nanooks tallied 68 points as a squad.
College of St. Scholastica was third (55), followed by Michigan Tech (46), Wisconsin Green Bay (44), Gustavus Adolphus (27) and St. Olaf (19).
Leading the way for the Nanooks was senior Lex Treinen (Anchorage, Alaska/Northern Studies), who completed the three-lap course in 40 minutes, 41.4 seconds, which was just over 10 seconds back of NMU's George Cartwright, who won gold in 40:31.3.
The two other scoring Nanooks were freshman, and Saturday's classic race champion, Michael Fehrenbach (Saint Märgen, Germany/Mechanical Engineering) and sophomore Logan Hanneman (Fairbanks, Alaska/Mechanical Engineering). Fehrenbach crossed the line in 40:49.0, good for sixth place while Hanneman was eighth in 41:06.8.
Sophomore Jonas Löffler (Saint Märgen, Germany/Business) also took ninth place after registering a time of 41:11.0. Junior Max Olex (Aalen, Germany/Northern Studies) took 15th in 41:33.9 and senior Tyler Kornfield (Anchorage, Alaska/Mechanical engineering) rounded out Alaska's day in 22nd with a time of 42:32.8.
The Nanooks will have to wait until Tuesday to learn who has officially qualified for the 2013 NCAA Men's and Women's Skiing Championships, being held Mar. 6-9 in Middlebury, Vermont. Those who qualify will compete in a 10K freestyle interval start event on Mar. 7 and a 20K mass start skate race on Mar. 9.
