The University of Alaska Museum of the North will host a series of art workshops for children ages 7-13 with an adult. The workshops are inspired by the special exhibit “Vogel 50 X 50” and will be held in the museum’s Creativity Lab on Tuesdays from 4-5:30 p.m.

The workshops include:

  • March 3, “Colors and Textures”

  • March 24, “Lines, Shapes & Simplicity”

  • March 31, “Not so square!”

Each workshop will explore different artists featured in the exhibit. Participants can experiment with techniques inspired by their art.

"Children are really good at letting go," said presenter Maïté Agopian. "Having their parents or caregivers with them also gives the adults an opportunity to try it out. Our activities are designed to stimulate curiosity, and we really hope to encourage multi-generational collaboration in our programs."

Participants can join each workshop as an individual activity, but doing them all will give a sense of continuity, Agopian said. “Like looking at an art piece through different angles.”

The "Vogel 50 X 50" exhibit opened Nov. 28 and features artwork donated to the museum by Dorothy and Herbert Vogel, a librarian and postal worker who amassed one of the most important contemporary art collections in the country.

Space in the art workshops is limited, so reservations are required. The cost is $20 per child and $10 for an adult. One adult can accompany up to four children. For more information, call 907-474-7505 or register online at www.uaf.edu/museum/education/kids-families/workshops/
