Museum offers discounted rates for Alaskans

Admission rates at the University of Alaska Museum of the North will soon be discounted for Alaskans. Starting April 1, admission for adult Alaskans 15 and older will be $8 and admission for children between the ages of 1 and 14 will be $5.
Museum director Aldona Jonaitis said the museum is committed to providing a quality experience to all visitors, especially those who live in this community.
“In our effort to make the museum more community-friendly, we’ve decided to offer all Alaskans a discounted admission,” Jonaitis said. “In addition, all active military and their immediate family stationed in Alaska are eligible for those reduced rates.”
Recently, the museum staff has increased activities and programs for families, such as including interactive displays in special exhibits and planning a series of Family Day events during the school year that draw on the talents of the museum’s curators and other UAF researchers. This outreach includes a partnership with the Fairbanks Children’s Museum to install their hands-on exhibits in the auditorium this fall.
Another reduction will be the rate UAF staff and faculty members pay. That will now be $4. University of Alaska Museum of the North members and University of Alaska students receive free admission to the museum.
While Jonaitis hopes these rates will encourage community members to visit the museum, the general price of admission will be increasing to accommodate higher operating costs. Admission for adults 15 and older will be $12, while the youth rate for children ages 1 to 14 will be $7.
