Cover images of three books for summer book club by UA PressStarting Tuesday, June 30, the UA Press Summertime Book Club will begin its most ambitious project yet — three books at the same time. The book club meets via Zoom every Tuesday at 7 p.m.

One of the book club's driving beliefs is that synthesis thinking — the ability and inclination to recognize links between unlike texts and experiences — is a hallmark of an enlightened world of higher education. Its newest venture is to exercise those synthesis muscles by reading and discussing the following books concurrently.

Readings for Tuesday, June 30

  • "Exhalation: Stories," by Ted Chiang — Frst story, "The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate," through page 36

  • "Baby No-Eyes," by Patricia Grace — Prologue and chapter 1, through page 20

  • "How to Be an Antiracist," by Ibram X. Kendi — Introduction and chapter 1, through page 23

New participants are encouraged to join the UA Press Book Club Slack space here. Questions and concerns should be directed to Nate Bauer at nbauer3@alaska.edu.
