New UAPress book reveals the story of Kate Carmack’s life

The University of Alaska Press has released “Wealth Woman: Kate Carmack and the Klondike
Race for Gold" by Deb Vanasse.Kate Carmack, first called Shaaw Tláa, played a pivotal role in events that changed the North — and the world. During a decade of wandering with her husband, George Carmack, she met nearly every key figure in Klondike gold rush history.
On an expedition up the Klondike River in 1896, her brother Skookum Jim, accompanied by her nephew and her husband George Carmack, discovered the gold that set off one of the biggest stampedes in history. Four years later, George abandoned Kate at a California ranch, where she had to fight for her wealth, her family and her reputation.
As the first popular rendering of the Klondike gold rush from the perspective of those who were there first, this biography gives voice to a survivor who, against all odds, ultimately reclaimed her true wealth.
