Aspiring miners may gather nuggets of wisdom during a free placer mining skills workshop in Fairbanks on April 23.

Certified mineral examiner Don Keill will share his knowledge during an eight-hour workshop offered by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service and the Delta Mine Training Center. The workshop will run from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in Room 154 of the University Park Building at 1000 University Ave.

Keill worked with the Bureau of Land Management in Alaska and he co-authored “Applied Gold Placer Exploration and Evaluation Techniques,” a field textbook for professional and amateur prospectors examining and evaluating placer deposits. The workshop will cover placer terminology, placer types, lode sources, ideas on finding deposits, historical and current mining methods, mining equipment, sluice boxes and gold recovery systems.

The workshop is limited to 15 participants who are junior high age or older. Preregistration is requested by noon Friday, April 22. For more information or to register, contact Mara Bacsujlaky, Extension community development agent, at 474-5741 or e-mail mcbacsujlaky@alaska.edu.
