The poet Heid Erdrich was originally scheduled to read but was replaced with John
Morgan.
Poets John Morgan and Adam Tavel will read excerpts of their recent works on Friday,
Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. in the University of Alaska Museum of the North’s Arnold Espe Auditorium.
Their presentations are the first in the 2015-2016 Midnight Sun Visiting Writers Series
at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
John Morgan won the Hatch Prize for Lyric Poetry at Harvard and holds an M.F.A. from
the University of Iowa, where he was awarded the Academy of American Poets’ Prize.
Morgan was a professor of creative writing at UAF's English Department for nearly
22 years and was awarded the title of Professor of English Emeritus in 1998. Morgan
will read from his new book of poetry titled Archives of the Air.
Tavel won the inaugural Permafrost Book Prize in Poetry for his work, "Plash & Levitation,"
and recently published by the University of Alaska Press. Tavel is a professor of
English at the Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury, Maryland. Tavel is also the
author of the chapbook "Red Flag Up" and the soon-to-be-released book of poetry titled
"The Fawn Abyss."
The annual Midnight Sun Visiting Writers Series is hosted by the UAF English Department.
The English Department, as well as the other arts, humanities, social sciences and
languages departments, are housed in the UAF College of Liberal Arts, which also sponsors
