Presentation proposals for photography conference
April 22, 2019
The Society for Photographic Education Northwest Chapter announces the 2019 Northwest
Chapter conference "In Our Own Voices: Culture/Identity," and invites participation
in exploring how photography can be used to interact with culture and identity, both
in personal and in educational matters. Set for Sept. 13 to 15, the conference will
be held on the Fairbanks campus.
"In Our Own Voices" was created to spark conversations and give attendees access to
resources and an international network relevant to their professions and areas of
interest. The two-day conference will provide peer-reviewed international presenters,
panelists, workshops, artists and portfolio reviewers, and will also dedicate space
to Alaska-based photographers, Indigenous artists and educational opportunities.
Organizers are seeking submissions through Wednesday, May 1, 11:59 p.m. Alaska time that
explore the photographic medium in relation to culture and identity. Topics are not
limited to the theme and may include image-making, history, contemporary theory and
criticism, multidisciplinary approaches, new technologies, effects of media and culture,
educational issues, funding, professional practices, and presentation of work in photography,
film, video, performance and installation. Proposals in various session formats are
welcome, including workshops, hands-on training, panel discussions, image-maker presentations,
teaching methodology and research, as well as lightning-round artist presentations.
Membership to SPE or residence in the Northwest region is not required to submit a
proposal.
