Work to improve drainage along Denali Lane is scheduled to begin April 14 or 15. Access to the Wi-Fi parking lots in front of the Patty Center and the lower residence halls will remain open, but drivers and pedestrians should maintain a safe distance from construction vehicles and workers, and follow all safety and rerouting signs.

The Denali Lane work is part of a larger project that includes South Chandalar Drive, Tanana Loop and Alumni Drive. The three-way stop at the junction of the three roads will be realigned and improved for vehicles and pedestrians. Other work in the area includes improvements to sidewalks, enhanced accessibility and drainage systems.

Construction on South Chandalar is scheduled for May and June, with breakup determining the exact dates the work can begin. Work on Tanana Loop and Alumni Drive is expected to be in June and July. Through-traffic will be rerouted along Geist Road and Yukon Drive from May through July.

UAF Design and Construction has been developing these plans since 2014 with the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, which incorporated federal and state funds for the construction in its FY19-20 Budget. Construction is considered an “essential service” under the State of Alaska’s COVID-19 guidance. Agencies and contractors involved in the project have established protocols to practice social distancing and reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19.
