Rasmuson Library celebrates Archives Month

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Elmer E. Rasmuson Library will celebrate American Archives Month in Oct. with a series of weekly presentations and an open house. The Alaska and Polar Regions Collections and Archives will host the free public events, to be held on Level 2 of the Rasmuson Library.
The events will kick off on Tuesday, Oct. 8, with an open house from 4:30 to 7 p.m. and will include tours of the archives stacks, vault tours, a Project Jukebox listening station and curators and archivists on hand to discuss their collections. Special material from the collections will be on display along with a demonstration of Project Jukebox. Light refreshments will be served.
On Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m., Leslie McCartney, curator of oral history at Rasmuson Library, will present “Pioneer Voices: Highlights of the Tanana-Yukon Historical Society Audio Collection.” The talk is part of the Tanana-Yukon Historical Society’s monthly meeting. The society recently made available hundreds of hours of oral history recordings made by several notable Interior Alaska pioneers. The presentation will feature sound clips of a few of these recordings.
On Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m., Rose Speranza, assistant archivist at the APRCA, will present “Seek and Perhaps Ye Shall Find … Religious Records and Resources for the Study of Alaskan History.” It will focus primarily on the written records created by various Christian denominations and will include where they are housed, the type of materials one might expect to find and how to use those materials.
On Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m., the Alaska Film Archive will offer a showing of historical films from the collection, including 16mm films from the 1960s through the 1980s. Possible titles include: “Alaska is Our Campus,” “Fairbanks, Where We Live,” and “Permafrost Frontier.” Interim film archivist Angela Schmidt will give a brief overview of the film archives and talk about the 16mm film format.
