Registration open for racial equity workshop
March 26, 2018
The Biomedical Learning and Student Training program — or BLaST — will offer a racial equity
workshop facilitated by Fran Partridge and Kyana Wheeler, Racial Equity Consultants
LLC (http://racialequityconsultantsllc.vpweb.com). This workshop focuses on creating an environment where students from diverse backgrounds,
especially rural Alaska, feel encouraged, supported and included.
All students, staff and faculty are welcome to participate.
Workshop participants will:
- become familiar with the terms we use as we talk about race and racism.
- understand the impact of “othering.”
- become familiar with the context in which we live: historical, institutional and structural.
- develop an analysis of “white dominant culture.”
- define implicit bias and understand how implicit bias impacts our decisions and behaviors.
- understand the importance of becoming vigilant in noticing and recognizing our own implicit bias.
- recognize micro-aggressions when we see, hear, experience or initiate them.
- practice and acquire tools to interrupt and challenge micro-aggressions.
- analyze and understand how we are impacted by or unconsciously participate in white supremacy culture.
- explore how structural racism, institutional racism and interpersonal racism impacts work at BLaST.
This workshop will be held Saturday, April 7, from 9 a.m.-4 pm. in IARC 501.
Register here. Lunch will be provided. For more information, contact Lori Gildehaus at lagildehaus@alaska.edu.
