Renate Wackerbauer was presented with the 2018 Honors Program Excellence in Teaching Award at a luncheon April 5. Wackerbauer is an associate professor of physics in the College of Natural Science and Mathematics. The annual event recognizes faculty members who have enriched students’ academic experiences through teaching honors courses or mentoring students in their honors thesis or capstone projects. The Excellence in Teaching Award is given to a single instructor chosen from nominations submitted by Honors Program students.

Wackerbauer was nominated by physics major and honors student Jason Beedle, who wrote, "Dr. Wackerbauer is, by all measures, one of the best professors here at UAF. She is not only able to explain a topic clearly, but also genuinely cares for her students and their grasp of the materials. One aspect that explains her excellence in teaching is her ability to understand a question and formulate an answer that is not only understandable, but also easily approachable."

Other nominees for the 2018 Excellence in Teaching Award were Jennifer Guerard, assistant professor of chemistry; Charles Mason, professor of journalism and communication; Paul McCarthy, professor of geosciences; Vladimir Romanovsky, professor of geosciences; and Jeremy Speight, assistant professor of political science.
