Women who study science at the University of Alaska Fairbanks are encouraged to apply
for the Kathryn E. and John P. Doyle Scholarship.
Former UAF Professor John Doyle established the scholarship in 2005 after his wife
Kathryn "K" Doyle died. K Doyle was the primary driving force in creating the scholarship.
Throughout her life, K advocated for women to have access to higher education and
more opportunities in the workplace.
John Doyle, who died in 2006, was hired by UAF in the early 1960s to establish a fisheries
extension program. In the late '60s, he obtained funding for more positions, creating
the Marine Advisory Program. He became the MAP leader. When MAP joined the Alaska
Sea Grant program, he was appointed assistant director of Alaska Sea Grant.
John and K Doyle were passionate about formal and continuing education. “'You are
never too young or too old to learn’ was a comment frequently heard,” said John's
son, Douglas Doyle.
The scholarship supports one undergraduate and one graduate woman studying a degree
in science at UAF. Applications are being accepted through April 29, 2016.
