The Science of Science Fiction, a two-night film series, will be held Oct. 24-25 at the University of Alaska Museum of the North.

On Tuesday, Oct. 24, film scholar Michael Lee of the University of Oklahoma will introduce the 1945 film “House of Dracula.” Mary Beth Leigh, a microbiologist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Institute of Arctic Biology, will follow with scientific commentary on the film.

Lee will also introduce the 1957 film “The Deadly Mantis” on Wednesday, Oct. 25. After that film, Derek Sikes, the museum's insect curator, will discuss the scientific facts and fictions behind the depiction of a giant, ancient mantis that emerges from an Arctic glacier.

Both events begin at 7 p.m. in the museum’s auditorium. The series is presented by the Alaska branch of the American Society for Microbiology and is supported by the UAMN Alaska Center for Documentary Film and the UAF Chancellor’s Innovation in Technology and E-learning Fellows Program.
