It's Science Potpourri's silver anniversary. The free University of Alaska Fairbanks science festival will celebrate 25 years of marrying science with fun on Saturday, April 14, from noon to 3 p.m. in the Reichardt Building on the Fairbanks campus.

The UAF College of Natural Science and Mathematics will host the family-friendly Science Potpourri this year with about 20 partners across campus and in the Fairbanks community.

The event offers free liquid nitrogen ice cream and a potpourri of science activities, including a marine touch tank and a sandbox where people can map a landscape and make it “rain” in real time. Children can also dig for fossils, see real lava, make slime to take home and look at stars in a portable planetarium.

There will be three shows:

  • 12:30 p.m. — Fun with Physics

  • 1:30 p.m. — Blast off with Chemistry

  • 2:30 p.m. — A "Lava" Fun with Volcanoes

Activities are designed for children of all ages, including toddlers.  Adults should accompany all children. Free parking is available behind the Reichardt Building or in adjacent lots. For more information, visit www.uaf.edu/cnsm or call 907-474-7608.

“This is a special event for me,” said interim CNSM Dean Anupma Prakash. “I have been to every one since 2002, when my children were young and attended as participants. I have watched them grow up over the years, and now they are volunteers at Science Potpourri.”

Prakash said Science Potpourri is a wonderful way to introduce and connect people to science, and to foster that connection. She thanked the many volunteers and partners who make the event possible every year.

Science Potpourri sponsors are the Alaska Statewide High School Science Symposium, Arctic Division of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Shannon & Wilson Inc., Domino’s Pizza and Paul Layer.
