Self-guided solar home tour planned in Fairbanks

Saturday’s third annual solar home tour will give the public a chance to visit four Fairbanks homes and the Cold Climate Housing Research Center.
The tour runs from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, May 15. Tour coordinator Rich Seifert, energy and housing specialist for the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, said this year’s tour will feature a home with a solar hot water heater, two homes with photovoltaic solar collectors and a home with a wind turbine.
The self-guided tour will begin at 1 p.m. at the Cold Climate Housing Research Center at 1000 Fairbanks Street. Maps will be available there for the rest of the locations, which are off Farmers Loop and Gilmore Trail. Participants are invited to view the renewable energy installations and talk with homeowners, who will be available at each of the sites until 4 p.m.
The tour is co-sponsored by the Cooperative Extension Service, the Cold Climate Housing Research Center and Golden Valley Electric Association. The Fairbanks tour is part of the National Solar Tour. Alaska solar tours also are planned Anchorage, Kenai, Homer and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. In 2009, 550 Alaskans from around the state visited 30 renewable energy sites during the tours.
