Shine a Light series presentation on Black history in Alaska

Jo Malbert Narváez will present Black in Hindsight: A Review of Black History in Alaska on Monday, Feb. 22, at 6:30 p.m. as part of the Shine a Light speaker series and Black History Month.

Malbert Narváez (he/they) will give a timeline tour of Black history in Alaska and incorporate the national context. They will explore how Black history is one filled with resilience, achievement, struggle and triumph.

Malbert Narváez is the diversity and inclusion coordinator for the Nanook Diversity and Action Center. Through their role, Malbert Narváez provides university students with personal growth and leadership opportunities in the areas of identity, intersectionality inclusion, equity, and social justice.

Sessions for Shine A Light: Promoting Conversation on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion seek to encourage understanding, build empathy and engage everyone in thinking critically about worldviews. The sessions take place the last Monday of every month with a new speaker and topic.

Shine a Light is hosted by the Northwest Campus, Nanook Diversity and Action Center, and Department of Equity and Compliance.
