Ski the Skiathon on March 8 and support UAF trails

Skiers in the annual Skiathon will race and tour in classic style through 20 kilometers
of UAF trails starting at 11 a.m. Sunday, March 8.
The event is a fundraiser for the UAF trail system.
The Skiathon began in 1967 and continued for a decade, becoming a popular spring skiing
event. The original race used the Skarland Trail system's 12-mile loop, which wound
through the hills north of the Fairbanks campus. The race, revived by Susan Todd and
Stan Justice in 2002, now is run entirely on UAF ski trails.
Racers will use the classic diagonal stride technique in parallel set tracks, not
the skate technique. There is a wooden ski division.
Registration is $15. Visit the UAF Trails Club webpage for the entry form and route map. Drop off entry forms at Beaver Sports before noon
March 7. Late registration is $40.
Bib pickup will begin at 10 a.m. at the UAF ski hut, just west of the Akasofu Building
on West Ridge. The mass start will be at 11 a.m. in the lower flat section of the
practice area, located a few hundred yards downhill and northwest of the hut. Daylight
saving time starts Sunday morning; move your clock forward an hour so you don't miss
the start.
