You see someone not wearing a face covering — what do you do? These can be intimidating conversations to have. Here are a few tips to consider as you navigate these situations.

Don't assume the person knows about the policy.
They might have forgotten their mask, be new to campus, or are a time traveler from the past — who knows?! Whatever the case, approach the conversation with grace and give them the benefit of the doubt.

Bring the policy to their attention. It's not what you say but how you say it. Be aware of your tone. Try saying something like, "I'm not sure if you're aware, but UAF policy requires the use of a face covering while indoors and when you can't maintain physical distancing."

Consider culture. People have varying communication styles. What might be direct, polite and considerate to one person may not be taken that way by another. Think about how you're communicating with the other person, try your best and be mindful of possible miscommunications.

Ask if you can help them locate a mask. Not everybody is lucky enough to have adorable hand-sewn masks made by family members or friends! There are various locations around campus where a person can grab a disposable mask to use in a pinch.

Be prepared for different reactions. You may receive a variety of responses from people when you bring this up. That's OK! Be direct and polite, and do your best.
