Speaker series to examine small-scale nuclear power in Alaska

The Alaska Center for Energy and Power is hosting a four-part series over the next eight weeks designed to educate Alaskans on emerging small modular and micro nuclear power technologies. Each session will include speakers with national and international expertise in this field. Discussion will range from advanced nuclear technologies to licensing and permitting, economics, and safety.

Nov. 19, 9-11 a.m. — “Advanced Nuclear: Regulatory Process and Timelines.”
Presenters include Jack Surash, deputy assistant secretary of the Army (energy and sustainability); Tom Sowinski, director, Office of Nuclear Energy, U.S. Department of Energy; Cory McDaniel, Idaho National Lab; and Spencer Nelson, Senate Committee for Energy and Natural Resources.
Dec. 3, 9-11 a.m. — “Economics of Advanced Nuclear in Alaska.”
Dec. 17, 9-11 a.m. — “Safety: Fuel, Transportation and Disposal.”
Jan. 14, 9-11 a.m. — “Moving Forward: Next Steps.”
