Student group to host Elizabeth Peratrovich Day event

The University of Alaska Fairbanks student group Natives for Positive Change will host the second Elizabeth Peratrovich Day celebration Feb. 16, 2013 from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Hess Rec Center on the UAF campus.
The Fairbanks Native Association Johnson O’Malley Dancers will open the program at 4 p.m., followed by an invocation led by Poldine Carlo. The celebration will celebrate the work of Peratrovich, a Tlingit civil rights activist, and include a presentation by Joy Elementary School students, an address by keynote speaker Allan Hayton, and a dinner honoring Alaska Native elders. The evening will close with performances by UAF’s Inu-Yupiaq and Troth Yeddha’ dance groups. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
Students founded Natives for Positive Change in 2011 to promote healthy rural and urban communities, encourage the continuation of diverse cultural heritage, and mentor Alaska Native youth in both academic and professional development.
