Student rally for education
March 4, 2019
UAF students are organizing a rally on Wednesday, March 6, in support of the university
in light of recent proposed budget cuts. Organizers are inviting students, faculty,
staff, alumni and Fairbanks-area community members to join them at 5:30 p.m. in Wood
Center before moving outside to Constitution Park.
"This rally is a symbol of our consolidation against the budget cuts as a university
and as a community," said Abigail Steffen, a junior double majoring in natural resource
management and French. The rally grew out of students' concern with a budget proposal
that would cut more than 40 percent of the state's funding to the UA system, as well
as a large cut to K-12 education throughout the state.
"We encourage those who are frustrated with the budget proposal and its effects on
Alaska to join us and make your voices heard," said Aidan Earnest, a sophomore majoring
in political science.
The event will be outside, so participants should dress accordingly. Parking is free
after 5 p.m. Organizers are encouraging attendees to bring signs and to invite friends
to attend. More information may be available on the Alaskans for UA Facebook page and under the events tab there.
