Students win at regional conference

UAF students brought home two prestigious awards from the ACUI Regions I and IV Joint Conference held in Reno, Nevada, from Nov. 14-16. Kevin Swenson, general manager of KSUA 91.5 FM, was named ACUI Region IV's outstanding undergraduate student, and Bernard Aoto, ASUAF student body president, was on the winning team in the student case study competition.

The ACUI Region IV undergraduate student award is given annually to a student in Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, Alberta, British Columbia or Saskatchewan who demonstrates dedication and an outstanding worth ethic through their involvement in campus life. As the general manager of KSUA, Swenson oversees all operations of UAF's student-run, student-funded noncommercial radio station, broadcasting on the air at 91.5 FM and online at ksuaradio.com. Leading a team of more than 50 student staff and volunteers, Swenson ensures that KSUA operates within FCC compliance while entertaining and informing the UAF and Fairbanks community. He was also instrumental in managing KSUA's move from Constitution Hall into Wood Center last summer.

Bernard AotoASUAF President Bernard Aoto competed in the student case study competition on a team with student leaders from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Southern Oregon University and the College of Alameda. Presented with a case involving complex free speech, Title IX and racial discrimination issues, Aoto and his team outlined a detailed response to the case that demonstrated their knowledge of the issues and understanding of student affairs theory and best practices.
