Swimming opens season this weekend against Cal Baptist

The Alaska women's swim team opens the 2012-13 season this weekend when it hosts conference foe California Baptist for a pair of dual meets at the Patty Center Pool.
Friday's meet begins at 6 p.m. (AKDT) while Saturday is set for a noon (AKDT) start. Both duals will be video streamed live via Alaska's Stretch Internet portal, free of charge. There will be nine individual events and two relays each day. Admission to both days is free of charge.
The Nanooks are coming off a solid year where five individuals qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championship, resulting in seven All-America swims and two podium appearances on the national stage.
Sophomore Margot Adams was national runner-up in the 200 yard butterfly as a rookie and was part of the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays to garner All-America status, including a fourth-place finish in the 800 free relay. Junior Bente Heller was a six-time All-American at last year's championship after being an Honorable Mention in the 50, 100 and 200 frees and being a part of the three relays. Sophomores Danielle Lyons and Gabi Summers were also All-Americans in the three relays.
Two weeks ago at the Blue-Gold Pentathlon, Adams broke the pool record in the 100 fly with a time of 56.55 seconds and took home the top individual honor with two wins and three runner-up swims. Sophomore Samantha Taylor followed in second while Lyons took third at the intra-squad meet.
Cal Baptist has been in action over the past couple weeks, most recently last weekend when it hosted the University of Redlands Swimming Invitational in Riverside, Calif. The Lancers took second out of six teams after tallying eight top-five finishes.
