The Political Science Department is hosting a lecture by visiting speaker Chad Briggs on the integration of Arctic security policy and scientific research. The talk will take place Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in Akasofu 401.

With rapid changes to both natural and built environments in the Arctic, national security planning requires detailed knowledge of future conditions to develop a strategy and adapt operations. This discussion details how previous efforts in the U.S. intelligence and military communities attempted to translate scientific data into actionable foresight, and what options might exist for improving security policies in Alaska in the future.

Chad Briggs is the director of public policy and administration and an associate professor at the College of Business and Public Policy at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Before coming to Alaska last year, he was based in Kosovo and Ukraine for four years, where he worked on hybrid/cyber warfare and energy policy. Briggs was formerly Minerva Chair and professor of energy and environmental security at the Air War College, and a senior advisor at the U.S. Department of Energy.
