The University of Alaska Fairbanks is sponsoring UAF Day at the Tanana Valley State
Fair on Tuesday, Aug. 8. UAF employees, students, alumni and friends are encouraged
to wear UAF apparel to show their school pride.
The day will highlight numerous UAF activities throughout the fair. UAF will have
a booth at the Borealis Pavilion, which will have information, class schedules, applications
and details about the upcoming semester. Admissions counselors will be available to
answer questions about registering for classes and applying for degree programs.
The School of Natural Resources and Extension will also host a booth in the pavilion,
with more than 125 free Cooperative Extension Service publications on gardening, energy,
food preparation and more. At the Boreal Pavilion kitchen, Extension will offer demonstrations
on making fermented vegetables (7 p.m. Aug. 5), jam (5 p.m. Aug. 8) and healthy smoothies
and ice cream (2 p.m. Aug. 12).
Many 4-H events will take place during the fair, including showmanship displays in
which 4-H and FFA kids show their animals. Some highlights include a fashion revue
and performing arts contest (12:30-3 p.m. Aug. 6, Ptarmigan Stage), horse show (Aug.
7-9, horse arena), large animal livestock show (3-5 p.m. Aug. 7, livestock show ring),
junior bakeoff (noon Aug. 9, Borealis Pavilion kitchen) and market livestock auction
(6 p.m. Aug. 11, livestock show ring).
The UAF Alumni Association will offer a food booth at the fair near the midway, where
alumni will make burgers and other treats. Proceeds from the booth fund UAF student
scholarships.
