Teaching Tip: Creating significant learning experiences
November 7, 2016
Do we design for lofty learning outcomes, or do we merely hope for them? Many of us
hope our students become better at learning how to learn and become self-directed learners,
but few of us identify these outcomes as specific goals and even fewer design to achieve
them. Dee Fink’s taxonomy of significant learning (2003) presents a holistic taxonomy
of learning experiences and reminds us to include such aspects as the human dimension
and caring. In this week’s Teaching Tip, we’ll take a brief look at Fink’s taxonomy
and discuss how it might help you achieve your course design hopes and dreams. Read more.
